Start’em young

March 31, 2009

I’m always curious about how children see things and how it translates into their artwork whether it’s drawing, painting, felting, building, etc. I’ve been hanging out with my friend’s kids for the past few months and it’s great to see how imaginative they both can be. And it’s equally fabulous that their mom is super creative herself and is constantly getting them involved with activities, programs and projects that involve sparking their imaginations.

Here are a couple of drawings they gave me recently:

Hmmm, I should get them to sign these masterpieces in case they hit it big one day …

Let’s get creative II

March 30, 2009

Through my sister (she deserves a blog post of her own so that will come soon), I learned of a fellow blogger who is also doing his own CSOTD (“creative something of the day”) and sharing it with others.

More impressively, Brian Hartley has been doing this since January 1, 2009! (See? I KNEW I should have stuck with my new year’s resolution!) Enjoy Harto’s Daily Doodle — lots of happy colours and his characters are full of personality.

And now for my own CSOTD:

It’s beginning to look a lot like Easter

March 29, 2009

I know the Easter rabbit’s not supposed to be visiting for a couple of weeks yet but I’ve suddenly had a population explosion of Lindt chocolate bunnies in my apartment (darn). Here are a few of them in action:

Guess I’ll just have to start rounding them up … mmmmmmm …

Today’s CSOTD can be considered a dedication to Robert De Niro/Martin Scorsese (ok, not really):

Fun fur fashion

March 28, 2009

On my way home this morning from the gym, I spotted the first spring fashion statement in the squirrel world — so glad I had my camera with me to catch the moment.  Check out this dude’s pants!

Having a ball

Saw this pic in The Globe and Mail‘s daily photo gallery the other day — have always wanted to try it and hopefully one day I will (beautiful scenery all around would just be bonus)!

What’s up, doc?

March 26, 2009

Very excited about Toronto’s annual Hot Docs Film Festival being back in town from April 30th to May 10th. For the past few years, I’ve been lucky enough to check out a few movies each time and try to go with different friends to share the experience and spread the word. Haven’t had a chance yet to look through this year’s schedule to read the write-ups but already looking forward to seeing some good stuff on the big screen.

And now for today’s CSOTD:

Getting schooled

March 25, 2009

I know there are a bunch of these Schoolhouse Rock skits floating around (I’m obviously stuck in some sort of nostalgic time warp) but here are a couple of my favourites — and don’t blame me if one of these ditties becomes stuck in your head for the rest of the day (“Lolly, lolly, lolly …” … sorry):

As for my CSOTD, here you go:

HEY YOU GUYS!!

March 24, 2009

Remember this? (I guess I’m dating myself now) … and yes, that would be Morgan Freeman (third “transformation guy)!

I’ve never understood all of the lyrics (did you?) so I finally looked them up and here they are:

1971-73
HEY YOU GUYS!
We’re gonna turn it on
We’re gonna bring you the power
We’re gonna light up the dark of night like the
brightest day in a whole new way
We’re gonna turn it on
We’re gonna bring you the power
It’s coming down the lines, strong as they can be through the courtesy of The Electric Company

1973 onwards (I didn’t realize they had changed!)
HEY YOU GUYS!!!!!!!!!!
Moving out in a new way
Moving out in a new way
We’re gonna turn it on (turn it on)
We’re gonna bring you the power (you can do it)
We’re gonna light the dark of night like the brightest day in a whole new way
We’re Gonna Turn it On (do do do)
We’re Gonna Bring you the Power (do do do do)
We’re gonna tell you the truest words that you heard anybody say
Moving out in a new way
Moving out in a new way
We’re gonna turn it on
We’re gonna bring you the power
It’s coming down the lines, strong as they can be through the courtesy of the Electric Company

Sign me up

March 23, 2009

Further to my post yesterday on signs in Chinatown, here are a few more that caught my eye and gave me a good laugh:

I don't know about you but I haven't had lamp in awhile.

Put your best foot forward

March 22, 2009

Took a walk through Toronto’s Chinatown yesterday and was very tempted to get some foot reflexology done after seeing these signs outside a clinic:

Foot Reflexology Sign - Chinatown, Toronto

This pic gives me great hope to become a foot model myself one day.

Hmmm, maybe they should have had someone do a quick proofread of this before printing?

So I drew today’s CSOTD using a marker on plain white paper and then scrunched it up for a cool, textured background:
