I’m pretty excited to see Prom Night in Mississippi (directed by Canadian Paul Saltzman) which will be showing at this year’s Hot Docs Festival in Toronto. Earlier this year, I checked out the related exhibit of photos by Catherine Farquharson at the Lens Factory.
The movie showcases a Charleston, Mississippi high school’s first racially integrated senior prom — which took place in 2008. This being his alma mater, actor Morgan Freeman first offered to fund the event over 10 years ago and was turned down. When he made his offer again last year, they finally accepted.
“They have separate proms and they have separate Homecoming Queens, one white and one black. I said, ‘how stupid can that be’.” – Morgan Freeman
Indeed. Incredible how some things are still so slow to change but looking forward to seeing some kids make great memories, and history, on their prom night.
